Verona completely enchanted me! While everyone knows it as the setting for Romeo and Juliet, this beautiful city in the Veneto region has so much more to offer. From incredible Roman architecture to world-class wine and some of the most romantic atmospheres in Italy.

Romeo and Juliet: The Obvious (But Amazing) Start

Juliet’s Balcony Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s also genuinely beautiful! The courtyard covered in love letters and the famous balcony where countless proposals have happened. The romance in the air is palpable, even for this skeptical travel blogger.

Juliet’s Statue Tradition says touching the statue’s right breast brings good luck in love. The bronze is worn smooth from millions of hopeful touches! I may have participated… for science, obviously.

The Love Letters People from around the world send letters addressed simply to “Juliet, Verona” and volunteers answer them all! There’s even a museum dedicated to this incredible tradition.

Arena di Verona: 2,000 Years of Entertainment

Roman Engineering Marvel This perfectly preserved Roman amphitheater from the 1st century is absolutely mind-blowing. Standing in the arena, imagining gladiator fights and now world-class operas… the history gave me chills.

Opera Season If you visit during opera season (June-September), try to catch a performance. The acoustics are incredible, and watching Aida or La Traviata under the stars is unforgettable.

Climb to the Top The views from the highest levels are spectacular. You can see across the entire city and understand why Verona was such an important Roman settlement.

Piazza delle Erbe: Heart of Medieval Life

This market square has been the center of Verona life for over 1,000 years. The medieval buildings, the fountain with Madonna Verona, the Torre dei Lamberti… every corner is Instagram-worthy but also historically fascinating.

Local Market The morning market is perfect for fresh produce, local cheeses, and people-watching. I had the best peach of my life here!

Castelvecchio: Fortress and Art

Medieval Military Architecture This 14th-century fortress is an incredible example of medieval military engineering. The bridge alone is worth the visit - it’s like something from Game of Thrones.

Art Museum Inside, the Castelvecchio Museum houses amazing medieval and Renaissance art. The Pisanello frescoes are particularly stunning.

Food Adventures: Veneto Cuisine

Risotto all’Amarone Made with Verona’s famous Amarone wine, this risotto is pure luxury on a plate. Rich, complex, and absolutely delicious.

Horse Meat Yes, really! It’s a local tradition in Verona. I was hesitant but tried it - surprisingly lean and flavorful. Definitely not for everyone, but part of authentic local culture.

Pandoro This sweet bread originated in Verona! It’s like Italian Christmas in cake form - soft, buttery, and dusted with powdered sugar.

Wine Country: Valpolicella Day Trip

Amarone Wine Region Just 20 minutes from Verona, this wine region produces some of Italy’s most prestigious wines. The rolling hills covered in vineyards are absolutely beautiful.

Villa della Torre This Renaissance villa and winery offers incredible tastings with vineyard views. The Amarone here is some of the best I’ve ever tasted.

Appassimento Process Learning about how they dry grapes for months to concentrate flavors for Amarone wine was fascinating. The dedication to quality is incredible.

Behind the Scenes

What Didn’t Make the Vlog:

  • Got caught in a massive rainstorm at the Arena (dramatic but not great for filming!)
  • Spent way too much money on wine in Valpolicella (no regrets)
  • My drone footage of the Arena was confiscated (restricted airspace - oops!)
  • Almost cried reading love letters at Juliet’s house (I’m more romantic than I thought)

Romantic Spots Beyond the Obvious

Giusti Gardens These Renaissance gardens are perfect for a peaceful stroll. The hedge maze and cypress-lined paths feel like a secret garden.

Ponte Pietra This Roman bridge over the Adige River offers beautiful views and is much less crowded than the main attractions.

Sunset from Castel San Pietro Climb up (or take the funicular) for the most romantic sunset views over the city. Perfect for couples or solo travelers alike.

Budget Breakdown (3 Days)

  • Accommodation: €50/night (boutique hotel near Arena)
  • Food: €35/day (including one fancy dinner with Amarone)
  • Attractions: €30 total (Arena, museums, Juliet’s house)
  • Wine tour: €45 (half-day Valpolicella tour)

What Surprised Me Most

How much there is beyond Romeo and Juliet! The Roman history, the incredible wine culture, the medieval architecture… Verona is a complete destination, not just a romantic stop.

Verona Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: April-June or September-October for perfect weather Getting Around: Historic center is very walkable Language: Italian (locals are very patient with attempts!) Must-Do: Arena visit, wine tasting in Valpolicella Romance Factor: Bring someone you love, or fall in love with the city itself

Literary Pilgrimage

Shakespeare’s Inspiration While Romeo and Juliet is fiction, the feuding families (Montagues and Capulets) were based on real Veronese families. Walking the streets where the story is set feels magical.

Other Literary Connections Dante wrote part of the Divine Comedy here during his exile. The literary history runs deep.

  • World-class wine region on your doorstep
  • Incredibly romantic atmosphere (even for cynics!)
