Valencia completely surprised me! While Barcelona and Madrid get all the attention, Spain’s third-largest city offers the perfect blend of beaches, incredible food, stunning architecture, and authentic Spanish culture without the overwhelming crowds.

City of Arts and Sciences: Welcome to the Future

Architectural Marvel This futuristic complex designed by Santiago Calatrava is absolutely mind-blowing! Walking through feels like being in a sci-fi movie. Each building is more stunning than the last.

L’Oceanogràfic Europe’s largest aquarium complex! The underwater tunnels with sharks swimming overhead gave me chills. I spent hours here - it’s like traveling through different ocean ecosystems.

Science Museum Interactive exhibits that make learning fun. Even as an adult, I was fascinated by the hands-on experiments and displays.

The Birthplace of Paella

Authentic Paella Experience You haven’t lived until you’ve had paella in its birthplace! I learned that real Valencian paella doesn’t have seafood - it’s chicken, rabbit, beans, and saffron. Mind blown!

Central Market One of Europe’s largest fresh markets! The art nouveau building alone is worth the visit, but the fresh ingredients, local vendors, and vibrant atmosphere make it unmissable.

Casa Roberto Local paella restaurant where I had the most authentic paella experience. Watching the paellero create the perfect socarrat (crispy bottom layer) was mesmerizing.

Historic Center: 2,000 Years of History

Valencia Cathedral Home to what many believe is the Holy Grail! Whether you’re religious or not, the cathedral is stunning and the climb up Miguelete tower offers incredible city views.

Plaza de la Virgen The heart of Valencia’s old town. Perfect for people-watching with a café con leche while admiring the beautiful fountain and surrounding architecture.

Silk Exchange (La Lonja) This Gothic masterpiece is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The twisted columns and vaulted ceilings are architectural perfection.

Beach Life: Mediterranean Paradise

Malvarosa Beach Just 20 minutes from the city center by metro! Golden sand, warm Mediterranean waters, and beach bars serving fresh seafood. I could have stayed here all day.

Port Area The marina area has been completely transformed with restaurants, bars, and beautiful walking paths. Perfect for sunset strolls.

Turia Gardens: From River to Park

Urban Green Space This amazing park was created in a former riverbed! It stretches across the entire city and connects the historic center to the City of Arts and Sciences. Perfect for walking or cycling.

Bike Culture Valencia is incredibly bike-friendly. I rented a bike and cycled through the Turia Gardens - one of my favorite travel experiences ever!

Food Adventures Beyond Paella

Horchata de Chufa This traditional Valencian drink made from tiger nuts is surprisingly refreshing! Perfect with fartons (sweet pastries) for dipping.

Agua de Valencia The local cocktail made with orange juice, champagne, vodka, and gin. Dangerously delicious and perfect for beach bars.

Las Fallas Food If you visit during Las Fallas festival (March), the street food is incredible. Churros, buñuelos, and so many sweet treats!

Behind the Scenes

What Didn’t Make the Vlog:

  • Got completely lost in the Central Market (but discovered amazing vendors!)
  • My attempt at making paella was… let’s just say I’ll stick to eating it
  • Spent way too much time at the beach instead of filming
  • Almost got caught in Las Fallas celebrations (intense but amazing!)

Las Fallas Festival Magic

If you’re lucky enough to visit in March, Las Fallas is absolutely incredible! Giant papier-mâché sculptures throughout the city, incredible fireworks, and an atmosphere like nowhere else. The final night when they burn all the sculptures is unforgettable.

Budget Breakdown (4 Days)

  • Accommodation: €35/night (modern hostel near center)
  • Food: €25/day (mix of markets, restaurants, and beach bars)
  • Attractions: €35 total (City of Arts and Sciences combo ticket)

What Surprised Me Most

How liveable Valencia feels! It has all the culture and beauty of Barcelona but feels more relaxed and authentic. Plus, you can actually afford to eat and drink here!

Valencia Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: April-June or September-October for perfect weather Getting Around: Excellent metro system connects everything Language: Spanish (Valencian is also spoken but Spanish works everywhere) Must-Try: Authentic Valencian paella, horchata, and fresh oranges Beach Day: Malvarosa is perfect and easily accessible

Orange Capital

Valencia is famous for its oranges! The trees lining the streets are beautiful, and the fresh orange juice is the best I’ve ever had. Fun fact: the oranges on the street trees are bitter oranges used for marmalade!

Modern Meets Historic

What I love about Valencia is how seamlessly the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences blends with the 2,000-year-old historic center. You can see Roman ruins and space-age architecture in the same day!

Why Valencia Stole My Heart

  • Perfect size - big enough for culture, small enough to explore
  • Incredible food scene beyond just paella
  • Beautiful beaches within the city
  • Amazing architecture from Roman to futuristic
  • Authentic Spanish culture without tourist crowds
  • Fantastic value for money
