Rome: The Eternal City That Stole My Heart
Experience Rome with me! From the iconic Colosseum to hidden trattorias, Vatican treasures to perfect carbonara - every corner tells a 2,000-year story.
Rome… the Eternal City. Three thousand years of history layered on top of each other, incredible food on every corner, and that golden light that makes everything look like a Renaissance painting. This city overwhelmed me in the best possible way.
The Big Three: Colosseum, Forum & Palatine
Colosseum: Icon of Icons Standing in the arena where gladiators fought 2,000 years ago gave me actual chills. The underground levels tour is absolutely worth it - seeing the lift systems and animal chambers brings the history to life.
Roman Forum Walking through the heart of the ancient Roman Empire is mind-blowing. These ruins were the center of the known world! I spent hours here just imagining daily life in ancient Rome.
Palatine Hill The imperial palaces offer incredible views over the Forum and great photo opportunities. The frescoes in Augustus’ house are particularly stunning.
Pro Tip: Buy the combo ticket and book time slots in advance. Rome gets BUSY!
Vatican City: Art & Faith
St. Peter’s Basilica The scale is impossible to comprehend until you’re there. Michelangelo’s Pietà brought me to tears - the emotion captured in marble is beyond belief.
Vatican Museums The Sistine Chapel is obvious (and incredible), but don’t miss the Gallery of Maps, the Pinacoteca, and the incredible spiral staircase at the exit.
Climbing the Dome 550+ steps but the views are worth every one. Rome spread out below you is breathtaking, and you really understand the city’s layout from up there.
Trastevere: Roman Soul
The Real Rome This neighborhood across the Tiber feels like a village within the city. Narrow cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, and authentic trattorias everywhere.
Santa Maria in Trastevere One of Rome’s oldest churches with incredible medieval mosaics. Much less crowded than the famous sites but equally beautiful.
Nightlife Trastevere comes alive at night! Locals, students, and travelers mix in the piazzas. The atmosphere is incredible, especially around Piazza Santa Maria.
Food Adventures: Beyond Tourist Pasta
Carbonara at Flavio al Velavevodetto The most perfect carbonara of my life! Creamy, silky, with perfectly rendered guanciale. This is what carbonara should taste like.
Supplì These fried rice balls stuffed with mozzarella are the perfect Roman street food. Crispy outside, molten cheese inside - pure comfort food.
Maritozzi Sweet brioche buns filled with whipped cream. Perfect with morning coffee and much more interesting than regular pastries.
Testaccio Market The best place for authentic Roman food experiences. Local vendors, amazing ingredients, and prices that won’t break your budget.
Hidden Gems: Beyond the Tourist Trail
Villa Borghese Perfect escape from city crowds. The gardens are beautiful, the Borghese Gallery houses incredible art, and the views from Pincio Hill are spectacular.
Quartiere Coppedè This Art Nouveau neighborhood feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The architecture is completely unique and most tourists never find it.
Baths of Caracalla These ancient Roman baths are incredibly well-preserved and much less crowded than the Colosseum. The scale and engineering are amazing.
Aperitivo Culture
Roman Happy Hour Aperitivo in Rome is serious business! Great bars around Campo de’ Fiori and Trastevere offer drinks with generous buffets. Perfect way to experience local social culture.
Negroni Sbagliato My new favorite cocktail! Prosecco instead of gin makes it lighter and perfect for afternoon drinking while people-watching.
Behind the Scenes Roman Adventures
What Didn’t Make the Vlog:
- Got completely lost trying to find the “mouth of truth” (worth it for the adventure!)
- Ate gelato for breakfast three days straight (no regrets)
- My attempt at speaking Italian with hand gestures was… enthusiastic
- Almost bought my weight in pasta at Testaccio Market
Fountain Hopping
Trevi Fountain Yes, it’s crowded, but it’s also genuinely stunning. Early morning visits are much better for photos and the experience.
Fountain of the Four Rivers In Piazza Navona, this Bernini masterpiece is incredible. The piazza itself is perfect for people-watching with a coffee.
Lesser-Known Fountains Rome has hundreds of beautiful fountains! Wandering and discovering them became one of my favorite activities.

What Surprised Me Most
How liveable Rome feels despite being a tourist destination. There’s authentic neighborhood life happening alongside the ancient monuments. It’s a real city, not a museum.
Rome Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit: October-April for cooler weather and fewer crowds Getting Around: Metro is limited but useful, walking is best for city center Language: Italian, but tourist areas have English speakers Must-Do: Book Colosseum underground and Vatican in advance Food Rule: If there’s a menu in 5 languages, find somewhere else!
The Light
Everyone talks about the golden hour light in Rome, and it’s absolutely real. Late afternoon light makes even ordinary buildings look magical. It’s a photographer’s dream.
Art Overload
Beyond the Vatican Capitoline Museums, Palazzo Altemps, Baths of Diocletian - Rome has incredible art everywhere. The museum passes can save money if you’re planning multiple visits.
Street Art Modern Rome has amazing street art scenes, especially in neighborhoods like Ostiense and Pigneto. The contrast with ancient monuments is fascinating.
Chiesa Hopping
Rome has over 900 churches! Many contain incredible art by famous artists and most are free to visit. It’s like a treasure hunt through the city.
Why Rome Captured My Soul
- Three millennia of layered history everywhere you look
- Incredible food culture beyond just pasta and pizza
- Art masterpieces around every corner
- That famous Roman attitude - passionate and proud
- Perfect blend of ancient and modern life
- Every piazza tells a story
The Roman Experience
Rome isn’t just about checking off monuments. It’s about wandering aimlessly, discovering hidden courtyards, having long lunches, and feeling connected to thousands of years of human civilization.
